How to Price Nail Art | Nail Tech Guide

Nail art can often be one of the hardest services to price. We’ve all been there — a client sends an inspiration photo, you think “that shouldn’t take too long”, and suddenly you’re 35 minutes deep into tiny hearts, chrome detailing and hand-painted swirls wondering where your profit went.

The truth is that pricing nail art doesn’t need to feel complicated. It simply comes down to understanding your time, your products, and the skill behind the service.

How to Calculate Salon Service Prices

If you’ve already worked through our Pricing Calculator, you’ll be able to see your hourly rate in the ‘Pricing Your Appointments’ section.

For example, let’s say the calculator has worked out that you need to earn £40 per hour. Now we have a starting point.

Start with time first. Rather than pricing nail art based purely on how “difficult” something looks, think about how much additional time this adds to your appointment.

Time is usually the biggest factor. If your hourly rate is £40, then:

  • 15 minutes = £10
  • 30 minutes = £20
  • 45 minutes = £30
  • 60 minutes = £40

Then you can simply add any additional product cost on top. For example, a simple nail art add-on may only include:

  • Chrome nails
  • Heart design nail art
  • Polka dot nails
  • Minimal line nail art

If these designs take around 15 minutes, you may be looking at £10 for time and around 50p–£2 for additional products. This gives you a nail art add-on price of approximately £10–£12.

Pricing Detailed Nail Art

Now, let's think about the more detailed designs. Seasonal looks and signature sets can often involve:

  • Layering colours
  • Hand-painted details
  • 3D nail art elements
  • Encapsulation
  • Multiple techniques combined

These services may easily add 30 minutes or more to an appointment. Using our £40 per hour example, if the nail art takes 30 minutes, that would already equal £20 minimum before adding any additional product usage. It’s important to remember that not all nail art products cost the same.

Chrome nail powders, nail glitters, nail art gels and embellishments all add cost to the service.

Creating Nail Art Visuals

One of the easiest ways to avoid awkward pricing conversations is to create clear categories with visual examples, this can be on your social stories or pinned to the top of your page — easy for clients to see.

Instead of clients booking "nail art" with no idea what that means, try something like:

Simple Nail Art | up to 15 mins
Chrome nail art, nail art hearts, dots, stars, simple details

Detailed Nail Art | up to 30 mins
French tip variations, layered nail art designs, swirls, seasonal details

Advanced Nail Art | up to 45–60 mins
Hand-painted work, multiple techniques, intricate designs

This helps clients understand, what they're booking, how long it takes, what it costs and what falls into each category. It also creates healthy boundaries for you as a nail technician.

Value Your Time & Your Skills

Charging what you're worth is probably the biggest hurdle for many nail techs.

Sometimes we think:

"It's only a few hearts."
"It's only a bit of chrome."
"It didn't feel difficult."

But clients aren’t only paying for the 15 minutes you spent creating the design.

They’re paying for the years of practice, product investment, trend knowledge, technique development and the experience you bring into the appointment. Learning new techniques takes time, practising them takes time and staying current with seasonal trends and new collections takes time too.

As long as your pricing is clear, your timings are realistic and your booking system explains what clients can expect, they already understand what they're booking in for.
