The truth is that long-lasting nails aren’t just about the products you use at the desk. They rely on thorough consultation, correct product selection, and proper aftercare education. A great manicure is teamwork, what we do in the salon sets the foundation, but what happens after matters just as much. 

Here’s how to give your clients the best chance of long-lasting, healthy nails. 

Start with the Consultation (Always!)

A proper consultation is one of the most important tools you have as a nail tech. Before you even think about products, take a moment to understand your client. 

Things to ask: 
  • What do they do for a living? (Hairdresser, cleaner, office job, healthcare?) 
  • What does their day-to-day life look like? 
  • Do they work with water, chemicals, gloves, or tools? 
  • What hobbies do they have? Gym, swimming, DIY, gardening? 
  • Have they had lifting, peeling, or breakages before? 

All of this information helps you decide how durable the service needs to be and which products will work best for their nails — not just what looks nice. 

Understanding Nail Types = Better Retention

Not all nails are the same, and treating every client the same way can lead to issues like lifting or breakage. 

For example: 
  • Dry, brittle or peeling nails often need more flexibility and support 
  • Weak or bendy nails need strengthening, not length 
  • Healthy, strong nails can usually tolerate a wider range of services 

Matching the service to the nail type is one of the biggest factors in improving wear time.

  • 2-In-1 Base Coat - Best for clients with strong, healthy nails or for pedicures. Simple and effective when no extra strength is needed. 

 - Ideal for BIAB treatments or clients with weak, brittle, flaky or peeling nails. It flexes with the natural nail, adds support, and helps reduce breakages. 

  • HEMA-Free Bond Base - Designed for clients with a confirmed HEMA allergy, while still offering flexibility and adhesion when used correctly. 
Choosing the right base is about supporting the natural nail, not overpowering it.  

BIAB™ vs Gel — Which is Best?

Perfect for: 
  • Clients with naturally strong nails 
  • Clients who want colour with minimal structure 
  • Shorter wear expectations 

Gel polish enhances what’s already there, but it won’t fix weak nails on its own. 

BIAB™ Benefits

Better for: 
  • Weak, brittle or breaking nails 
  • Clients who want to grow their natural nails 
  • Added structure and strength 

BIAB™ acts as a strengthening nail overlay, helping protect the nail and encourage healthy growth but it’s important to remember it’s not an indestructible product.

Not all BIAB™ formulas are the same, and understanding the differences allows you to tailor the service to your client’s nail type, lifestyle, and desired length. 

Original BIAB™

Best for: 
  • Most clients and nail types 
  • Short to medium natural nail length 
  • Clients wanting a simple strengthening overlay

Hard BIAB™

Best for:

HEMA-Free BIAB™

Matching BIAB™ to Length Matters

While BIAB™ is brilliant for strengthening and protecting the natural nail, it’s important to manage expectations: 
  • Original, All-In-One and HEMA-Free BIAB™ are best for short to medium lengths 
  • Hard BIAB™ is ideal for longer nails and short to medium extensions. 
  • For clients wanting noticeable length, systems such as GelPot or ProForm™ are more suitable 
Choosing the right product protects both the nail and your reputation as a professional. 

Nail Aftercare: The Missing Piece

Even the best manicure can fail without proper aftercare, and this is where educating your client is key. 

Things your clients need to know: 
  • Nails need hydration — daily cuticle oil makes a huge difference 
  • Gloves should be worn when cleaning or using chemicals 
  • Nails are not tools (no opening cans, scraping labels, or picking!)

  • Soaking nails in water (baths, swimming) can weaken them over time 
  • A set of nails isn’t indestructible and that’s okay. 

Your job is to do the best you can at the desk. Once they leave, caring for their nails becomes a shared responsibility.
