Heat Spikes: What They Are, Why They Happen and How to Handle Them

If you’ve ever had a client quickly pull their hand from the lamp and say, “Ooh, that’s hot!”, you’ve probably experienced a heat spike. 

Heat spikes can feel alarming for a client, particularly if they haven’t had one before. As nail technicians, understanding why they happen, what can make them more likely and how to respond confidently helps us provide a more comfortable service while reassuring our clients along the way. 

So, what’s actually happening in the lamp? 

What is a Heat Spike?

A heat spike is the sudden sensation of heat that can sometimes be felt while a gel product is curing. It happens because curing, or polymerisation, is an exothermic reaction — which simply means that the chemical reaction releases heat.  

Before curing, a gel product contains molecules including monomers and oligomers, alongside photoinitiators that respond to the specific light energy from the curing lamp. When the product is exposed to the correct light, the photoinitiators trigger the curing process and the molecules begin joining together to form the strong polymer network that creates the finished coating. 

Each time molecules join together, a tiny amount of heat is released. One reaction alone would be impossible to feel, but when millions of reactions happen across the nail, that heat can become noticeable. If a large amount of product polymerises very quickly, more heat is released within a shorter space of time, which can create the sudden burning or warming sensation we call a heat spike.

Why Heat Spikes Can Feel Worse in Warmer Weather

You may notice clients mentioning heat spikes more often during the summer months or during a heatwave. 

Temperature can affect how nail products behave. In warmer environments, gel can become more fluid, changing how it handles during application, while increased temperature can also affect the rate of chemical reactions. This makes good temperature control in your working environment particularly important when the weather is very warm.  

Think about the starting point of the product, the client’s hands, and your salon environment. If everything is already warmer than usual, the additional heat released during polymerisation may feel more noticeable to the client. 

During warmer weather, try to keep your working environment at a comfortable, stable temperature and store products according to the manufacturer’s guidance. Avoid leaving products in direct sunlight or close to windows where they may become excessively warm or be exposed to unwanted UV light. 

Other Causes for Heat Spikes in Nail Appointments

There isn’t always one single cause. Often, it can be a combination of the product application, the curing process, and the condition of the client’s natural nails. A little warmth during curing can be normal, but excessive heat should never simply be ignored. 

Some of the most common factors include: 
  • Product applied too thick: More product means more molecules reacting at the same time, which can result in more heat being released during curing.  
  • Thin or sensitive natural nails: A naturally thin nail plate provides less insulation between the curing product and the sensitive nail bed underneath.  
  • Damaged or over-filed nails: If the nail plate has been compromised or excessively thinned, the client may feel the heat from polymerisation much more intensely.  
  • Using the incorrect nail lamp: A gel system and its curing lamp are designed to work together. Using a gel nail lamp that is not matched to the product can cause the coating to cure incorrectly or too rapidly, increasing the risk of excessive heat and other curing problems.  
  • Client sensitivity: Everyone experiences heat differently, so one client may notice warmth that another client barely feels.  

This is why consultation and observation matter throughout the whole service. A client’s nails may also change over time, so never assume that because they haven't experienced a heat spike before, they won't experience one during a future appointment. 

How to Handle Heat Spikes

If a client tells you the product feels uncomfortably hot, respond straight away. 

Ask them to remove their hand from the lamp and allow the uncomfortable heat sensation to subside. Once they are comfortable, the curing process can be resumed according to the product system’s guidance. If your lamp has a manufacturer-approved low-heat or gradual-curing mode for the product being used, follow the system instructions for when and how to use it.  

The most important thing is never to encourage a client to push through significant discomfort. A heat spike can be painful, and excessive overheating can potentially damage the nail bed.  

If a client repeatedly experiences strong heat spikes, take the opportunity to assess the service rather than treating it as something that simply happens. Consider the condition of the natural nail, your application thickness, the product being used and whether the complete recommended curing system is being followed. 

How to Explain Heat Spikes to Clients

The words we use can make a big difference. 

If a client suddenly feels a burning sensation and doesn’t know why, it can naturally make them worry. A simple explanation can immediately make the situation feel more manageable. 

You could say: 

“Sometimes, as the gel cures and hardens, the chemical reaction releases heat. You may feel a quick warming sensation, particularly with thicker builder products or if your natural nails are more sensitive. If it ever feels uncomfortable, tell me straight away and remove your hand from the lamp, we’ll let the sensation settle before continuing.” 

There’s no need to overwhelm clients with chemistry, but explaining the basics shows that you understand the products you are working with and that their comfort is part of the service. 

It can also be useful to mention the possibility of warmth before curing, especially if you know a client has sensitive or compromised nails. A quick warning means they know what to look out for and feel comfortable telling you if something doesn’t feel right.

Understanding the science behind the products we use is just as important as perfecting the application. 

Heat spikes are linked to the chemistry of polymerisation, but several factors can influence how strongly they are felt, from application thickness and nail condition to curing equipment and the working environment.
