Quashing the Myth: Do Nails Really Need to Breathe?
In this blog post we’re diving into a topic that has caused a lot of confusion in the nail industry: Do nails really need to breathe? This myth has been around for years, but it's time to clear the air and set the record straight.
The Myth of "Breathing" Nails
You've probably heard clients say, "I need to give my nails a break so they can breathe." This idea stems from the misconception that nails are like skin and require exposure to air to stay healthy. But the truth is, nails are made of keratin, a type of protein, and they don't have respiratory functions like the rest of our body. So, let's bust this myth wide open!
Why Nails Don't Need to Breathe
1. Nail Anatomy 101
Nails are composed of dead keratin cells. They grow from the matrix, located under the cuticle, where living cells produce new nail material. Since the visible part of the nail is made up of dead cells, it doesn't require oxygen from the air. Instead, nails get their nutrients and oxygen from the bloodstream, which supplies the matrix.
2. Nail Health is Internal
Healthy nails reflect your overall health. A balanced diet rich in vitamins and minerals, proper hydration, and good circulation are key factors in maintaining strong, healthy nails. External factors like nail polish, acrylics, or gels systems don't affect the nail’s ability to "breathe" because they don't rely on atmospheric oxygen.
3. Breaks Between Manicures
Taking a break between manicures is a personal choice rather than a requirement for nail health. When BIAB™ or gel products are applied and maintained correctly, there’s no need for the natural nail to ‘rest’ or ‘breathe.’
Some clients or technicians may choose to fully remove product after a few infill appointments to check the natural nail and ensure everything looks healthy but if the nails are in good condition, a fresh application can be applied straight away. The key to healthy nails lies in correct prep, safe removal, and regular cuticle and nail care.
A break can help in maintaining the nail's strength and avoid thinning or weakening that can be caused by over-filing of the natural nail.
4. Moisturising and Care
Instead of worrying about letting nails breathe, focus on moisturising and caring for the nail and cuticle area. Cuticle oils, hand creams, and proper nail care routines are essential to keep nails flexible and prevent breakages.
Common Misconceptions
Gel and Acrylics Suffocate Nails
Many believe that using gel products or acrylics will suffocate the nails. However, these products do not hinder the nail health if they are applied and removed correctly and safely. Problems usually arise from improper application, over-filing, or using inferior products.
Nail Polish Causes Damage
Wearing nail polish won't damage your nails if you follow a healthy routine. The key is to use a good base coat to protect the nail surface. Regularly moisturising the nails and cuticles will also prevent dryness and brittleness.
Educating Your Clients
As a nail tech, it's important to educate your clients about proper nail care and dispel myths.
Here are some tips to share:
- Balanced Diet: A balanced diet that includes nutrients such as biotin, iron, and vitamins A, C, and D can support healthy nail growth. For any specific concerns about nail or general health, clients should seek advice from a healthcare professional.
- Hydration: Encourage regular water intake, hydration plays a key role in maintaining nail flexibility.
- Gentle Products: Recommend gentle, nourishing nail care products and cuticle oils.
- Proper Removal: Highlight the importance of professional removal for gels and acrylics to help protect the natural nail.
